The project involved the engineering and constructive development of a bronze architectural shading canopy to be installed in Paris district La Défense.

The architectural project was drawn up by the “Explotation Architecture Studio” our firm developed the structural design for the General Contractor named “Base”.

The canopy is made up of several hollow circular columns that support ribbed bronze
plates. The ribs, arranged radially, are also made of bronze and are mechanically anchored to the horizontal plates with suitable mechanical fastening.

The two levels of roofs are coated on the front by a perforated bronze sheet.
The whole structure is weighted at the base with a 20mm thick steel plate; anchoring has
been avoided in order not to damage the existing flooring. Columns are adequately fixed
with countersunk screws to the steel plate at the base.

 

User benefits:

It should also be noted that in this project the possibility of Advance Design to perform
non-linear analyses was also exploited.
In fact, in order to take into account the actual stiffness and the actual joint rotation at the base due to the particular kind of restraint, an appropriate calculation model has been created parallel to the one with rigid restraints (and used for resistance checks).
In detail, in the second calculation model the 20 mm steel base plate was inserted to replace the fixed restraints and a non-linear analysis was performed in order to model ground constraints (not resistant to traction).
The detailed analysis was performed adopting only the load condition maximizing the horizontal displacements.
